High expectations for the tie between Liverpool and Bayern Munich, two of European football's history. Anfield hosts the first meeting between the English and the Germans.

Finalist defeated in the last edition of the Champions League, Liverpool did not have an easy life in the first phase of the current Champions League, having played the "death group" together with PSG, Naples and Red Star. A win against Naples (1-0) on the final day allowed Liverpool to go ahead with nine points from the Italian side and two fewer than the French from PSG. They were in second position, Liverpool would hardly have a "nice" opponent at this stage of the competition and luck ended up dictating a duel with Bayern Munich, Group E winners Benfica. Defeated in their three UEFA Champions League games - Napoli (1-0), Red Star (2-0) and PSG (2-1), Liverpool won their three games in Anfield. At home, Jurgen Klopp's pupils have only lost once in the current season and have won nine of their last ten appointments. At the entrance to a two-legged tie in which the goals scored outside the doors could be decisive, it is important to note that Liverpool have the least defense of the Premier League with 15 goals seated in 26 games, good numbers for an English team.

In the Premier League, the season even began to feature for the Reds who were taking advantage of the slides of Manchester City, but draws against Leicester (1-1) and West Ham (1-1) in recent weeks have given way to recovery of the opponent.

The competitive schedule is always very demanding for English teams, but at the entrance to this challenge Liverpool have no reason to complain about that.  Niko Kovac's continuation of Bayern Munich's technical lead was "by the wire" in November, but problems at the clubhouse have been remedied and the Croatian has remained at the helm of the team. In practical terms, the Bavarian side have achieved their goals: they have overcome the first phase of the Champions League in the first place of the group, continue in the German Cup and Bayern are alive in the championship.

Bayern have already played six official games after the traditional winter break and the balance is positive: five wins and one loss - against Bayer in Leverkusen by three balls to one. In the most recent challenge on Friday, Bayern did not miss out on a scare: Augsburg had a two-run lead (1-0, 2-1), but the Bavarian colossus would return home with a triumph by three balls to two.

The Germans concede goals in all the matches they played after the winter break and that is something to take into account. Kovac's side have shown some difficulties in defensive transition and against an opponent like Liverpool, this could well be fatal. In the group stage, Bayern conceded five goals in six games, four of them in Ajax (1-1, 3-3). On the other hand, Bayern have scored at least two goals in six of their last seven Champions League matches.

Although it maintains the dominating style of the last seasons, Bayern has not been able to be so overwhelming from the point of view offensive.

Arjen Robben and Corentin Tolisso are both injured. Thomas Muller prepares to fail the challenge due to suspension. Kinglsey Coman was featured in the win against Augsburg but left the meeting with complaints.
